I Have Some Exciting News!

Hey everyone, I feel like it's been a while since I blogged about anything that's a little more personal. It's probably because my life isn't particularly interesting, and I don't feel like people would want to read about every little thing that I do~ but today is different because I have some actual news. I put off mentioning it to most people until it was confirmed, but now I know for sure so I can share it with you all!

*Apologies if this post is a little wordy~ I'll go back to normal after this*

To start the story off, I'm currently 18 years old and in my last year at College. I know the education system works differently in every country, but in England, I'll finish this year with three 'A-Levels' and then I'm supposed to go off to University and do a degree of some sort, or perhaps an equivalent qualification depending on what I want to be. The problem is that I don't know what I want to be*-* I applied for University and got offers from all five choices, but truthfully I don't feel comfortable going because I don't have my heart set on anything.

I'm sure this is common for anyone my age, but the College and education system push quite hard for students to go to University, and I feel like that's wrong. Unless you know exactly what you want to become, why waste so much time and money doing a degree you don't truly want to be doing? So with that being said, I basically decided I need to take a Gap year to figure out where I want to be, before I make such big decisions.

But of course I don't want to waste my time off, I want to make the most of it. So, I applied for a place on a Gap year program about three or four months ago, and I'm so happy because I found out today I got a place! To put things short I'm going to be spending six months working abroad in South Korea. It's at an international school where I'll be working for a while just as an assistant, but my duties include things like helping with lessons, organizing activities and working with the other people on the program to help the daily running of the school.

The school is on Jeju island, which looks so beautiful and I'm super stoked to be working there. To me it really sounds too good to be true, I will be staying in my own studio flat on campus with meals and facilities all included. I don't have to pay for anything, and on top of that they pay each member of the program for working there every month.

I don't know all the details yet but I'll definitely keep you all updated if you'd be interested in reading about it - I feel so blessed to have this opportunity, and I want to start packing my suitcase right now!

  4. JEALOUS!! I WANT TO GO TO JEJU ISLAND (I've seen enough kdramas to know about that place) and I really do wish that I had taken a gap year. I've just finished university last month, and honestly, I still don't know what to do career-wise, so don't sweat it. MAYBE I SHOULD GO OVERSEAS AND TEACH ENGLISH.

    1. Omg yas the Kdrama feels will be strong~ I think I just need some time to properly decide, not necessarily on an exact career, just the path that I want to take^^ Teaching abroad is one of my options though so this trip should help me decide if that's what I want! Thanks so much for your comment Vanessa! <3

  14. WHOA that sounds amazing ;W;

I wish I could go to Korea as an English teacher or something but I can't because I'm from Finland T^T It sucks that you have to be from US, CAN, UK, AU or some other native English speaking country to be a teacher there.

    1. Hehe thanks Jenna! ^^ Yes, that's a shame, if you're fluent I don't think it should matter which country you are from! But perhaps in the future more opportunities will come available to you*-* x

  15. OMG Congrats! :DD
I was reading your post and I was thinking ''oh, this situation seems a bit similar to mine!'' (I also decided to take a gap year to study japanese and improve my national exam grades before I go to architecture University) But then I got to the part about South Korea, and my reaction was basically: O.O !
Oh gosh that's so amazing! I think it's a really great experience, and I'm looking forward to your updates! <3

  16. Working in South Korea for 6 months will be amazing! Although, I have to disagree with you on the whole university thing - nearly everyone I know who goes to uni had no idea what they wanted to do when they started (including me), and you usually get more of an idea or know what you want to do by the end. Also, university is amazing, it's so much fun and you meet loads of new friends! Student life is the best!

  18. Hey Emily,
That is so amazing. I am seriously so happy, and simultaneously jealous of you. Haha.

I agree, university isn't always the answer, there are plenty of other options. My school also pushed us to go to Uni, but it will still be an option for you when you are older IF you decide to go there.

And what better way to experience life than to travel and try out a job for a while? So awesome. Jeju island looks so beautiful too. I bet you will have a great time, even if you decide that the career path is not for you in the end. :D
