Korean Skincare Secrets

Have you ever wondered how your favourite Kpop idols or Korean actresses always seem to have such glowing and flawless skin? I've always been totally jealous, but it's becoming easier for those of us not living in Asia to pick up some of the products and techniques that are popular there. I did a little bit of research into the subject, and I'm going to share a few of the things that I think you might all be interested in! Let me know what your skin and routine is like in the comments, and perhaps even recommend some of your favourite products^^ Thanks for reading!

Im Yoona

Song Hyekyo

1. Number of products used

First of all, I'm sure that like me, many of you have skincare routines consisting of three products. I cleanse, tone and moisturize my skin every morning and evening, thinking that I didn't need anything else. But many Korean women use between five and ten products every day! Usually this will include: Cleansing Oil, Foam Cleanser, Toner, Serum, Cream (often more than one) and sun protection. Sheet masks are also becoming more frequently used, as well as sleep packs.

2. Attitudes

Part of the reason Korea's skincare is so advanced, is that there is a much higher demand for it. Where I live, more girls would choose to buy makeup instead of high quality skincare. The theory is that the better your skin, the less makeup you need~ and the more naturally beautiful you are the better! This makes more sense to me, and now I question why I buy so much makeup.

3. Ingredients

I found that on multiple sources, it is said that Korea is around ten times ahead of the UK and US in terms of skincare. Another reason for this is that they use lots of new ingredients that we don't have. An example being snail slime, which my Mum was horrified at when I got a sample of some with a Yesstyle order one time! Because of this, you can actually find that some high street brands in Korea have products that rival the expensive high end ones in the UK.

4. Diet

Korean women tend to avoid very salty foods to keep skin healthy, as well as drinking plenty of water every day. It's said also that spicy food isn't good for the skin - but these things are generally known all around the world.

  1. I actually started using "Korean skincare routine" in Autumn and my skin has started to get a lot better! :)
    1. I wash my face first with coconut oil and then with foaming eco soap
    2. Toners (blackhead remover and then Etude house's skin malgeum #fresh)
    3. mask sheet or mask - 2 times a week
    4. Many different moisturizers ( I sometimes use more than 5 in one day lol XD )
I love spicy food so it's really sad that I can't have both good skin and spicy food at the same time :(

Yoona's photo seems to have quite much photoshop :S I think it's kinda weird because she's pretty without it anyway :o

    1. I've started to get more into it as well, especially sheet masks, I'd never heard of them
before until I discover Korean beauty(:

I also think it's a shame that they use some photoshop on Yoona, because in all pictures she has perfect skin anyway^^ Thanks for reading Eunmi! x

  3. My skin care products varies a bit depending on what I buy since I'm still searching for the holy grail products. But generally:
    1. Make up remover
    2. Oil cleanser (on the evenings especially if I had make up on)
    3. Foam cleanser
    4. Scrub 1-2 times a week
    5. Rinse off with water !
    6. Toner that helps to get rid of blackheads and oil since my skin is oily
    7. Moisturizer (On the mornings I use Nature Republic's Aloe Vera gel and on the evenings I use TonyMoly Aqua Aura Water Bomb sleeping pack until I run out of the product..)
    8. Eye cream and help for my trouble areas (pimples, blackheads, redness etc)

I also try to put a mask on 1-2 times a week. I wish they'd sell sheet masks here in Finland with cheaper prices and with more variety. I've only seen one (Korean) brand but this year I've found it only once.

And then I of course drink loads of water :D

    1. Well you must have really nice skin^^ I also wish that I could get sheet masks locally~ it's too pricey for me to use them twice a week._. Thanks for reading Jenna! x

  4. There is also another detail for why they spend so much time working on their skin care : their skin is really sensitive and prone to allergies! They design their products to be perfect to any one. That's why for example their BB creams are carefully designed and produced.
Also, I tough that in the UK you guys would seriously care about skin care. I mean, Vivianna, Essiebutton and Gh0stparties talk about more and new skin care products every week. I've been interested about getting more products from French Pharmacy brands and other UK brands (like REN for example) because of them :o
Also, it doesn't matter if we spen 200$ or 400£ on the best foundation...if our skin is terribly ill and damaged, foundation and other products will never work well.
Personally, I invest on Skin Care all year but during my Birthday, Sales and Christmas I tend to take advantage and buy some make up products...besides that I only get things on realllyyyyy special occasions (like if a foundation runs out, I'll go and get other one, other wise I won't...)
Oh and the thing about spicy food is quite funny because, apparently they eat spicy food during the hot Summer Oo

Anyway, I think that we always should do some research and work on the best for us.
Thank you very much for your tips :3
Take care, have a nice day!*

I think korean skincare products are just heaven and their theory sounds better to me as well :D You just gave me a nice idea for my next blog post :D I will post my skincare routine haha.
I can recommend you a few products! The Laneige Sleeping Pack EX_ is really good. And for removing make up the Innisfree Apple Juicy oil cleanser :3 I also heard that the Laneige Water Bank Cream should be nice as well~

  7. Well I've loved your post, the truth for my skin care is very important, people are always asking me how I keep my skin healthy and use more products of skincare to makeup, the truth if your skin is cute no need first use and many other products, right now use three Korean sunscreens, most of my skincare products are Japanese and Korean. Use a cream for the eye area, a moisturizer, a powerful but gentle cleanser a tonic a mist, just cleansing oil in my eyes, lipbalm, emulsion, wow takes me a while but the results are worth it completely my face looks much healthier than some years ago.

  8. true I think the kpop stars everyone sees have really good skin/beautiful but then most of them had some type of plastic surgery in a way:/..or like underneath all that makeup/photo editing0.0
I think they stress beauty more in Korea but their products are pretty good thoughc:

    1. I agree, but with certain idols it seems like every photo of them has perfect skin^^ Even if they had plastic surgery, I don't think it makes a difference to skin condition~ but yes photoshop is often overused in adverts and things like that:o Thanks for reading Judy! x

  9. This is why I rarely wear makeup and try to take care of my skin more! Also, the all naturAL look is much more comfortable and less of a hassle for those lazy people for example, me >u<
For me, usually Asia based products work better on my skin than rather those from Au, US, because of how much chemicals are used in the western products. I've recently tried going for more organic products because I have really sensitive ... Everything.
    Very inspiring post Em ;D

  12. I have been trying to invest on skincare products but it's just really hard. Makeup's result is instant, but with skincare you have to wait for at least a month to see the result. And so far I have not yet found skincare products that suit me really well. Korean women's dedication at taking care of skin is amazing!

Also, you make a good point, I don't think it's beneficial to use too many products. If I were to change my routine, I would probably replace the products I have with better Korean ones, and perhaps introduce a few more steps like masks or serums(: x

  18. Hi Emily! (^_^) I have watched (well, I always watch hehehe~) Rain's latest reality show, Rain Effect. In the first episode, he shared that one of his skincare secret is washing his face thoroughly. And he doesn't tap his face dry afterwards. He also splashes on water spray and just lets the water dry naturally. hehehe~ I'm actually following his advice and so far, my skin has been softer. (^_^)

  20. I prefer an Asian skincare routine, it has cleared my face up drastically. A good brand to try is Benton. The best skincare products I have ever used!

An Asian skincare routine goes like this:

    Morning:
Cleanser (If you have oily skin, use a cleanser made for normal skin. Cleansers usually made for oily skin strip too much oil, thus making your skin oiler to compensate for the dryness.)
Toner (Their toners are moisturising, unlike ours which are drying. If you have oily skin, still use a moisturising toner. Your skin is oily due to dryness.)
    Serum/Essence
    Gel - For light moisturising
Cream - For further moisturising, especially if you have dry skin. If you have oily skin, apply little by little. Feel your skin to see how it's reacting.
    Sunscreen

    Night:
Oil-Cleanse - To get rid of the bulk of your make-up.
Cleanser - If your cleanser isn't getting off the rest of your make-up, get a new cleanser.
Toner - NOT for getting rid of the rest of the make-up
    Serum/Essence
    Gel
    Cream
    Mask (Optional)
    Spot Treatment (Optional)
